Israel and Lebanon are reportedly close to a ceasefire agreement to end the Israel-Hezbollah conflict. On 24 November, Israeli and US officials confirmed that Tel Aviv had approved a preliminary deal with Lebanon, though final approval from Israel’s security cabinet is pending. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu held high-level discussions with senior ministers and intelligence chiefs to address three key reservations, including Israel’s operational freedom in case of violations, clarifications on disputed border points and concerns over France’s role in enforcement. Analysts suggest the ceasefire discussions gained momentum amid fears of US withdrawal from mediation efforts. The draft agreement proposes a 60-day transition period, Israeli military withdrawal from southern Lebanon and the deployment of the Lebanese army near the border. Hezbollah would move heavy weaponry north of the Litani River. The deal includes a US-led oversight committee and an assurance letter permitting Israel to act against imminent threats from Lebanon. Amid negotiations, fighting has intensified, with Hezbollah launching rocket barrages causing damage and injuries in Israel, while Israeli strikes targeted southern Lebanon and Beirut. Despite ongoing violence, officials express optimism about finalising the agreement within the week. n18oc_world n18oc_crux
