French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said the death toll on cyclone-hit Mayotte would be “too heavy”, speaking after visiting the island on Monday (December 16).Emergency workers searched for survivors on Monday and battled to restore services in Mayotte, France’s poorest overseas territory, where hundreds or even thousands, are feared dead from the worst cyclone to hit the Indian Ocean islands in nearly a century.Cyclone Chido devastated large parts of the archipelago off east Africa over the weekend with winds of more than 200 kph (124 mph), strewing homes over hillsides, and cutting phones, power and drinking water.Retailleau said the Muslim practice of burying the dead within 24 hours made it difficult to make estimations of the death toll.He also pointed at the heavy presence of undocumented migrants on the island as one of the reasons for the heavy casualties, as many did not heed warnings to move to higher ground.Retailleau said the priority was to bring potable water and food provisions for Mayotte’s population. n18oc_worldNews18 Mobile App – https://onelink.to/desc-youtube
