India’s 1971 military triumph over Pakistan is celebrated as Vijay Diwas. With the liberation of Bangladesh, the surrender of Pakistan, and a reaffirmation of India’s commitment to justice and compassion, this 13-day conflict came to an end. Nationwide, Indians from all walks of life commemorate this special day on December 16 each year. Bangladesh was established on December 16, 1971, when Pakistani Army Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi signed the Instrument of Surrender in Dhaka. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi led the moment of glory alongside military heavyweights like Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Lt. Gen. Jagjit Singh Aurora.
